About

Worked for the North Western Electricity Board.

After school he started work in the spinning room at Drake Mill. In 1938 he was appointed meter reader with the electricity department at Farnworth Council. After the Second World War when electricity was nationalised he was appointed records clerk at Farnworth.

Served in the RAF in the Second World War.

Represented South Ward from 1949.

Secretary of Council Labour Group and the local Labour Party.

County Councillor from 1964. Alderman from 1968.

Member of the Divisional Education Executive. Member of the Governors of St James's Junior School, George Tomlinson and St Gregory's RC School. On managing body of five local primary schools.

Stage Manager with the Farnworth Amateur Operatic Society and Chairman of the Abbeyfield Society.

For many years he was connected with the Scout Movement. He was Scout Master with the St James Troop and in 1960 he received the Silver Acorn Award in recognition of his unbroken service. He became District Commissioner in 1953.

Alderman James Stevenson said his election was a great honour for the Scout Movement.

Anglican - worshipped at St James's Church, New Bury.

Unmarried - no Mayoress was appointed.
