He started work at 13 in the warehouse at Crooks Mill Bolton for 12 months and then joined Bolton Electricity Department as an apprentice. In 1945 he became an Installations Inspector and then Assistant District Engineer for 27 years. He retired in September 1971.

He became a Councillor in 1946 and a County Councillor in 1950.

Chairman of the County Health Committee 1966 and Chairman of the People's Welfare Committee 1970.

He was Vice Chairman of the Ambulance Committee in 1952.

He was made a Bolton County Magistrate in 1955, an Alderman in June 1963 and a County Alderman in August 1965.

Old peoples' homes in Highfield Road, Farnworth and St-Anne's-on-Sea were named after him.

He was the first President of the Ambulance Brigade in 1963.

He was a Governor of Farnworth Grammar School, a member of Farnworth Social Circle Cricket Club and a member of the Electrical Trade Union.

Emigrated to Canada in 1988 with his wife, Lily, to be near to their son, a doctor in Vancouver.
