Started work at Nuttall's Mill, Worsley Road but spent most of his working life in the engineering industry.

Represented South Ward for 25 years from 1945. Alderman, appointed 1949.

He served on the County Council from 1953 to 1964 and was County Council representative on the Local Divisional Education Executive.

He was noted for his wit and humour in debates. He was a Trustee of the Rishton and Seddon's Charity and a member of the local Disablement Advisory Committee.

Represented the Farnworth Branch of the AEU on Farnworth Trades Council.

President of Farnworth and District Parks Veterans Bowling Association.

His great-niece was Joyce Kellet, Mayor of Horwich 2001-02, 2012-13 and member for Horwich North East on Bolton Council.
