Son of Arthur Leslie White, a Sapper with the Royal Engineers who died in 1943 as a Japanese Prisoner of War while working on the infamous Burma-Siam Railway.

Worked in a mail order distribution firm.

Became an official in the General and Municipal Workers Union.

Represented Tonge Ward 1964-74, 1986-90 and Tonge with Haulgh Ward 1994-2012.

Honorary Alderman of Bolton Metropolitan Borough, admitted 2012.

MP for Bury and Radcliffe 1979-1983 (Labour).

Government Whip from 1976 and Opposition Whip from 1980.

Unsuccessfully contested Bolton North East constituency at the 1987 General Election.

Chairman of Lancashire Co-operative Development Agency.

Magistrate. Chairman of Bolton Magistrates Bench.

Chairman of East Bolton Regeneration Partnership.

A sometime amateur boxer and footballer.

Keen Bolton Wanderers supporter and a part-time football referee.

His wife, Eileen, was Mayoress.
