Held senior positions in Bolton Conservative Party including parliamentary agent.

Unsuccessfully contested Bolton South East constituency in the 1983 General Election.

Served on Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive and on NW Health Authority.

Received the Pride of Bolton Lifetime Achievement Award for services to Bolton 2011.

Awarded Honorary Doctorate for public service by Bolton University 18 July 2013.

Secretary of Mortfield Football Club, Halliwell and a devoted supporter of Bolton Wanderers.

Church Warden of Bolton Parish Church.

Installed as an Honorary Lay Canon at Manchester Cathedral 3 November 2019.

At a Conservative Party Conference he once advocated that all Social Services Departments be abolished and their role transferred to local Health Trusts.

His Wife, Christine, was Mayoress.
