Spent most of his working life in cotton mills.

Served in the Royal Navy Coastal Force during the Second World War as a crew member on motor torpedo boats.

Worked in cotton industry and later became a full-time trade union official with Bolton Card and Ring Room Association.

Licensee of The Griffin public house in Great Moor Street, Bolton 1972-74.

Machinist at Edbro Ltd from 1974 until his retirement.

Represented Daubhill Ward 1979-2004.

Chairman of Leisure Services 1989-1993.

Honorary Alderman of Bolton Metropolitan Borough, admitted 2004.

He recalled visiting HMS Beaver - Bolton's adopted ship - at Liverpool and having to leave the Mayor's Chain on dry land in case the ship sank with him on it and the Chain was lost!
