Structural Engineer. Worked for John Booth and Sons (Bolton) PLC and AB Steelwork.

Represented Heaton 1966-74 and Deane cum Heaton 1973-1994.

Honorary Alderman 1994.

Member of Greater Manchester Fire Authority.

Member Bolton Corporation Waterworks Committee.

Chairman of various Committees including Policy, Management, Arts, Education, Planning.

During his Mayoral year Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip visited Bolton as part of the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of Bolton becoming a Borough (the second in the country) on 1 December 1988.  The Queen also opened the Market Place and the Water Place on that day and watched a civic play. The Queen's visit was the subject of a talk he gave to many local groups and societies.

An event was also organized to promote the Borough, at which comedy writer Frank Muir gave a talk.

Commemorative silverware was presented to the Borough by the Duke of Westminster and Sir Kenneth Morrison.

He opened Topp Way, an extension to Firwood School and the William Morrison's supermarket. There are plaques commemorating these events and there is also a plaque at the Jumbles Reservoir.

The Mayor's Charities were the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, Bolton Hospice and Intermediate Technology.

His wife, Dr Mavis Jean Allanson JP, was Mayoress. She was a GP and Medical Officer of Health for Bolton and Senior Medical Officer, Manchester Area for the DHSS. She was also Mayoress for her mother, Alderman Mrs Nora Vickers, Mayor of Bolton 1966-67.

James Scowcroft, Mayor of Bolton 1846-47, was his Great Great Uncle.

His great grandfather was a tailor to the gentry and to Bolton Artillery and his grandfather was also a tailor. His father was a structural engineer.

He has three sons, Peter Bowyer Allanson, Director, Department of Health, Mark Arthur Allanson, Director of External Affairs, Bolton University and Roger Brian Allanson, Solicitor.
