Bleacher, merchant, Borough magistrate.
Proprietor of Little Bolton Bleach Works at Back o' th' Bank, Bolton.
He was in partnership with his brother James Slater, who lived in Bradshaw, and later also Robert Bolton Wylde as "Bleachers, Calico Printers, Dealers and Chapman."
His brother James died aged 39 when they were in a gig returning from Horwich and the horse bolted, turning the carriage over 31 May 1835.
Represented West Ward 1838-47, 1851-54 and East Ward 1856-59.
He was elected in favour of the Conservative nomination, Stephen Blair on the casting vote of the previous Mayor, Thomas Gregson.
He threw a tea party for all their employees to celebrate when his eldest son, Joseph Slater, was married to Alison Reddish of Crosse Hall, Chorley on 4 June 1856.
