Where are Bolton Council's allotments located?

The map below shows the locations of Bolton's allotments.

Please note: due to a server upgrade, map-based information and address lookups will be unavailable on 1 and 2 April 2014.

Due to very high demand, all of our allotments now have waiting lists, which are limited in size. On applying for an allotment you will be added to a waiting list if possible and be contacted when a plot becomes available for you. If space on the waiting list isn't available at the time of application, you will be advised to re-apply at a later date. When waiting lists reach their maximum numbers the list will be temporarily closed until numbers are reduced.

Please be patient as some sites have a long waiting list. If you would prefer not to wait for your preference site and can travel further afield, an alternative site or shorter waiting list may be offered but, in any instance, we will endeavour to find you an allotment as soon as possible.

Some sites have plots that may be more suitable for people with limited mobility. The Horticultural Officer can advise about appropriate sites and discuss individual requirements.

How do I apply for an allotment?

To be eligible for an allotment you must be the minimum age of 18 years and reside in the borough of Bolton or within the 1 mile radius outside the borough.

You can only apply for an allotment by contacting the Horticultural Officer and stating which site you are interested in. Please note that the Horticultural Officer is frequently on site and may not be available when you call. Please leave your name and contact telephone number and your call will be returned.

If the site you applied for is available, our Horticultural Officer will invite you to visit the site so that you can discuss your requirements. If you decide to rent the plot you will be required to sign a simple tenancy agreement, which clearly sets out your rights and responsibilities. If the waiting list of the site you apply for is full then you will be advised.

What does it cost to rent an allotment?

The fee you pay to rent an allotment will depend on the size of the plot. There are various sizes available but an average full size plot is approximately 259m. A plot this size currently has an approximate annual rental charge £45.33.

Concessionary rates are available for the over sixties, currently this is a 25% discount on the rental charge of a plot. Proof of age may be required.

Rental charges are subject to periodic review and tenants are notified in advance of any changes to charges.

Allotments offer value for money and can reduce your food bill as well as improving your health. To find out if there is a vacant allotment in your area, or if you would like any advice on growing your own produce, please contact us.
