Avoid paying overdue charges

Renewing your items saves you paying overdue charges if you find that you can't bring them back by the return date.  Renewals also mean you can keep items for longer than the original three week loan period. So if you haven't finished reading that book you started, don't return it - renew it!

You can renew items for a further three week period, unless they are requested by another customer.

Ways to renew:

You may renew items twice.  After this time you must return the item to the library so that we can see it.  If you still wish to borrow the item then, if it has not been requested by another customer, you can borrow it again.

24 hour Automated Information and Renewals Service

If you have a touch tone telephone, you can ring our 24 hour automated Information and Renewals Service (see the Contacts tab).

This service gives details about library opening hours, a general overview of library services in Bolton and information about how to renew items you have on loan. In addition, you can check your account. For example, hear a list of items you have on loan or have reserved.

In all cases you will need to quote your library card number which is underneath the barcode on your library card. If you have a smartcard your library number will be written on the back.

Renewing Audio-Visual items

Items such as CDs and DVDs can be renewed if not required by other customers. They will incur a further hire charge at the rate of the original loan. Any fines, or hire charges for renewal of audio visual items, are payable on your next visit to the Library.

Reserving Items

There are a number of ways to reserve library items:

  • Log into your account on our library catalogue using your library card and pin number. Search for the item you would like to reserve and click the 'Place Reservation' button at the bottom of the item detail screen.
  • Fill out a Contact Us form with your library membership number and details of the book you wish to reserve. This would also be the preferred method of contact should you wish to reserve an item which is not currently in stock at Bolton Libraries.
  • Ask a member of staff at your local library. Find your nearest library here.

Library Account Notifications

Did you know that we can send you a text or email message to tell you if your items are overdue or if you have any reservations awaiting collection?  To take advantage of this service, please provide us with your email address or mobile phone number on your next visit to the library.

If you opt for email notifications you will get a reminder 3 days before your loans are due back as well as the standard reservation and overdue notifications. If you are interested in this service please speak to a member of staff on your next visit to the library.

Please note that final overdue notifications will continue to be sent by post.  Customers without a telephone will continue to receive all notifications by post.
