Ways to pay bills to Bolton Council

  • Change your Council Tax instalments

    • Annual council tax bills in Bolton are usually issued in March to be paid by 10 monthly instalments from April to January. However, you can ask for your instalments to be spread over 12 months from April to March.

      You can also:

      » choose to pay weekly, fortnightly, 4 weekly or monthly
      » pay by direct debit, standing order, cash, cheque, debit or credit card

  • View your Council Tax or Business Rates account online

    • You can see how your council tax or business rates bill has been calculated and your outstanding balance. You can also:

      » check the payments you have made and when any future payments are due
      » set up or amend a direct debit
      » view or print your current and previous bills

      The website is available 24 hours a day and it is updated regularly, so you can see up to date information and check the progress of changes you have told us about. You will need to register but you will only need to do this once.

  • Direct Debit for Council Tax and Business Rates

    • You can set up a direct debit for weekly, fortnightly or monthly payments on council tax. On business rates you can set up a direct debit for monthly payments, these will be made automatically until you ask your bank to stop them.

    • If you have a credit or debit card you can pay online via the internet. You will need to have your bill and credit or debit card ready.

      If you use a credit card to pay, a surcharge of 1.463% will be payable. This reflects the bank's charges to the Council for accepting credit card payments.

      There is a minimum transaction amount of £5.

  • Post Office or Pay Point

    • You can now pay your Council Tax, Business Rates, and Housing Benefit overpayments via Post Office and Pay Point.

      You need to take your bill with you so they can scan the barcode on your bill or swipe your card for Council tax payments.

  • In person

    • Payments can be made in person at the cashier section in the One Stop Shop at Bolton Town Hall. You will need to have your payment reference with you.

      Cashier opening times are Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm

      Cheque payments only can be deposited in the secure cheque payment box located in the One Stop Shop during the office opening hours of Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5.30pm and Saturday’s 9am to 1pm

      If you prefer to speak to us, you can pay your bill by credit or debit card by ringing us on 01204 331634 between 8.30am and 5.30pm.

      For planning and building applications please call 01204 336000 between 8.30am and 5.30pm.

    • If you wish to pay by post, your cheque or postal order should be made payable to Bolton MBC, write the account reference number on the back and cross it with the words “A/C Payee” and send it to:
