Off-road cycling and horse riding

Bolton has approximately 50 kms of public bridleways and restricted byways that cyclists and horse riders can use. In addition to these there are a number of concessionary routes that you can ride on as well. The majority of these routes are concentrated within and around the two country parks at Smithills and Moses Gate.

These routes provide the opportunity for quiet off road riding, but may be somewhat remote for some people. There are other riding routes across the borough, but they are somewhat fragmented. Increasing the number of safe off-road bridleways is one of the Public Rights of Way team's key aims.

Providing better bridleways

The Council is involved in a number of initiatives to provide more bridleway routes.
The West Pennine Moors Bridleway Strategy covers a 90 square mile area that includes parts of Bolton, Bury, Blackburn with Darwen and Chorley. Their website contains more information and downloadable maps of bridleway routes.

The strategy has created village and area routes, town to country links and upland challenge routes.  These provide a mix of routes accessible at a local level, that also link to the rest of the country via the Pennine Bridleway Feeder Route.

The main improvements within Bolton are listed below:

Village and area routes

Egerton - Catherine's Edge
Egerton Circular

Town to country links

South Horwich
Walker Fold
Eagley Valley

Upland challenge routes

Winter Hill Traverse

In addition to the above work, we are also involved in creating new bridleways where there is an identified need. Moses Gate Country Park already has a number of public bridleways and some routes that are used as concessionary bridleways. The council intends to dedicate more routes to the public within the park, making it one of the safest places to ride a horse.
