Funeral Expenses

The Council provides cemeteries at Astley Bridge, Blackrod, Farnworth, Heaton, Horwich, Tonge and Westhoughton. Heaton Cemetery can cater for a variety of faith and community funerals.

Many of the items are arranged and carried out within the Funeral Director’s fee. For those not wishing to use a Funeral Director, these costs will need to be considered when arranging the funeral.

Help in paying for funeral expenses

If the person responsible for the funeral, or their partner, is receiving certain benefits, financial help may be available from the Social Fund. You should contact the Benefits Agency of Social Security for further information and to apply to the Fund. The Benefits Agency of Social Security also provides further publications and other sources of help. Age Concern and the Citizens Advice Bureau also provide advice, and in some cases, financial help.

If a person dies in a hospital and no one is prepared to arrange and pay for the funeral, the Health Authority will fulfil this obligation as will Local Authorities, if the person dies within their area. However, it must be clear that no suitable arrangements have been made or will be made for the disposal of the body and the Local Authority can reclaim expenses from any estate. If there is no estate, a basic funeral will be arranged which may include the use of an unpurchased grave.
