The composition and safety of animal feeding stuffs is fundamental to food safety and is paramount in the requirement to safeguard our own food "from plough to plate".

Our Trading Standards Service will inspect and take samples of animal feed and raw materials used in animal feed at premises in Bolton. This work has been particularly important following the banning of meat and bone-meal in most animal feeds after the BSE outbreak.

Feed businesses (this includes farms either storing feed for use with livestock and those producing crops to be used as feed) need to register with Trading Standards.

The regulations governing animal feed changed significantly at the beginning of 2006 so if you are at all unsure about the status of your business you should contact us.

All initial enquiries to Bolton Trading Standards are taken by the Citizens Advice consumer helpline
