Common Assessment Framework (CAF) is part of a new process of Integrated Working where everyone supporting children and young people work together effectively to meet their needs and improve their lives.

The CAF is a standard way of identifying a child’s strengths and needs and is used to access additional services for a child or young person where needed. It can be used to share information and should help reduce the number of times families are asked to repeat their story as the CAF can be shared if agreed with everyone involved with the child or young person. Information Sharing is important for early intervention to ensure that children and young people get the services they require and to prevent the situation getting worse. It is also essential to protect children and young people from suffering harm from abuse or neglect and to prevent them from offending.

When a child’s situation is complicated and there a number of services involved then it may be helpful to have someone to co-ordinate services identified in the CAF action plan. The Lead Professional is someone who is already working with the family who provide the extra support to make sure they are kept informed and help them to make choices.
