We receive many enquiries from families who wish to locate the burial place of their loved ones or carry out research into their family history.

Burial and cremation records available online

We have teamed up with the specialist family history organisation 'Deceased Online' and the following records are available on their website:

  • Digital scans of burial and cremation registers
  • Computerised records of burials and cremations (where registers are not available)
  • Details of those buried in each grave
  • Cemetery maps indicating the area for each grave location
  • Some photographs of memorials and headstones

Burial records are also kept on microfilm in the Archives Department at Bolton Central Library and are available to browse at your leisure. Please telephone first for an appointment. Once you have the grave number and the deed/grant numbers, please contact the Cemeteries Office at Registrars (address in contacts tab) if you wish to locate the grave in the cemetery or require further information regarding the plot. Normally there are no charges for this assistance.

If you are not able to visit Bolton Central Library and require the Cemeteries Office to search the records for you, please write or email all details to the Cemeteries Office at the Registrars' address in the contacts tab. The Council reserves the right to make a charge for this facility, usually five pounds per search.
