Do you want to be a school governor?

School governors are people from the school's community who wish to make a positive contribution to children’s education. Governors are the largest volunteer force in the country and have an important part to play in raising school standards through their three key roles of setting strategic direction, ensuring accountability, and monitoring and evaluating school performance.

Bolton has more than 1800 people volunteering as governors.  We want to recruit people who care about children’s education. They could be:

  • parents
  • grandparents
  • local business people and employers
  • people who contribute to school life
  • community group members  eg. from churches, mosques, voluntary organisations etc.

They must be aged 18 or over at the date of their election or appointment. There is no upper age limit.

I’m interested, what do I do now?

You can contact your local school to ask if they need a new governor, or your local education authority (LA) will be able to help you find a school or advise on opportunities to become a LA governor.  If you are a parent - ask your school about elections for parent governors.  Schools, LAs and local diocesan authorities will be able to tell you about opportunities as community governorsLA governors and foundation governors respectively.
