The Gambling Act 2005, came into effect on 1st September 2007 and extends local authority responsibilities to include the licensing of premises where gambling takes place and issuing permits for other gambling.

The Gambling Act contains three licensing objectives which underpin the function of the local authority and the Gambling Commission. These objectives are central to the new regime. They are:

  • preventing gambling from being a source of crime or disorder, being associated with crime or disorder, or being used to support crime;
  • ensuring that gambling is conducted in a fair and open way;
  • protecting children and other vulnerable persons from being harmed or exploited by gambling.
