Supporting adults with additional needs

Supporting adults with additional needs

Some adults require extra support due to physical disabilities, learning disabilities, mental health conditions, sensory impairments, or age-related conditions. In the UK, adult social care services aim to promote independence, dignity and wellbeing for individuals with additional needs.

Types of Support Available

  • Personal care assistance with washing, dressing, and meal preparation
  • Support with mobility and accessibility at home
  • Help with managing finances and making decisions
  • Social and community engagement activities
  • Specialist support for complex needs, such as autism or dementia

How to Access Support

Contact Bolton Council for a care needs assessment. An assessment will determine eligibility for funded care or support services. The Finance Team will also check if you are eligible for direct payments to arrange your own care. Aditionally, charities and advocacy groups can provide guidance on this.

Rights and Safeguarding

  • The Care Act 2014 ensures fair access to care and support.
  • Safeguarding protections are in place to prevent abuse or neglect.
  • Individuals have the right to personalised care plans.
  • Mental capacity laws protect decision-making rights

Resources and Further Help

  • Local authority social services departments
  • NHS continuing healthcare for complex medical needs
  • Charities such as Mencap, Mind, and Age UK
  • Carers UK for family and unpaid carers
