What is it?
Parents and carers must ensure that children attend school and have the necessary travel arrangements. However, independent travel is not always an option for some children and transport has to be provided.
Transport assistance may take the form of a bus pass; a shared mini bus or taxi; or a parent transporting their child and being reimbursed through a travel allowance.
Does my child qualify for transport assistance?
Transport assistance may be provided if:
- your child has an EHCP that identifies the provision of transport
- your child has a long-term physical disability (e.g. cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy); or
- your child has short-term physical difficulties or medical problem
- your child has an EHCP which identifies the provision of transport and s/he is now transferring from school to a college placement
How do I apply?
If your child has an EHCP that specifies transport, you do not need to make a request for transport assistance; this will be arranged by the Inclusion and Statutory Assessment Officer with the transport provider.
If your child has a long-term physical disability that prevents them from walking to school or travelling on public transport please complete this form. You will need to submit medical evidence from a Consultant or Paediatrician to support your application. The authority may seek further medical information to enable them to come to a decision on providing transport assistance.
If your child has a short-term physical or medical difficulty that prevents them from walking to school or using public transport you will need to complete this form. You will need to submit medical evidence from your doctor to support your application. This should identify the length of time your child will be incapacitated. The authority may seek further medical information to enable them to come to a decision on providing transport assistance.
If your child has an EHCP that specifies transport and is moving to a college placement you will need to make a request for transport by completing this form. The authority will consider the request using the information in the last Annual Review of the statement of special educational needs and will seek advice from relevant professionals.
What happens next?
Your application will then be assessed and you will be notified once a decision has been made. If you qualify for assistance you will be contacted to confirm what transport is being provided and details of pick up times etc.
What if I change my address?
Please notify Bolton Passenger Transport Service as soon as possible as this may affect the transport being provided.
