A haul of shisha pipes worth thousands of pounds has been seized after a café raid in Bolton.

Officers took 49 shisha pipes, five boxes of coals and a large holdall containing smoking tubes from a shisha café.

The premises were raided following a tip-off from a member of the public.

Environmental Health staff entered the building with Greater Manchester Police, HMRC and Greater Manchester Fire Service.

Officers discovered that people were openly smoking shisha pipes and cigarettes inside enclosed areas of the building.

The Health Act 2006 prohibits smoking in an area which has a roof or ceiling, unless at least half the wall space is open.

Due to the poor ventilation, Environmental Health officers also found that carbon monoxide levels were "dangerously high".

Council bosses have warned that shisha bars which breach health and safety regulations face tough action.

The council is determined to crack down on cafes who are flouting the law.

Executive Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, Cllr Nick Peel, said:

“Tobacco of any sort can’t be smoked in enclosed premises and the pipes were taken because of the safety risk to customers. This café was flagrantly breaching a number of regulations."

“We welcome intelligence from anyone in the community who may know of other premises operating in such a manner. We will take robust enforcement action, and we will look to prosecute."
