Local discretionary relief

The government has given us a set amount to help local businesses who have had a large increase in their rates following the 2017 revaluation. In 2020/21, the final year of the scheme, the funding available is £12k.

You may get discretionary relief on your bill if:

  • the rateable value of your business property has increased as a result of the 2017 revaluation and
  • you're a local business and
  • you're not getting any other mandatory relief and
  • your business has continuously occupied the property since 31 March 2017

You won't get discretionary relief on your bill if:

  • your business moved into the property after 1 April 2017
  • the property is used for educational purposes (such as a school or college)
  • the property is occupied by a local authority
  • no people are employed at the premises
