In the Youth Offending Team we offer a specialist service for young people aged 0-17 and their families.  Our aim is to reduce offending by young people.

Who do we work with?

Our team works with young people who:

  • Get arrested by the police
  • Are arrested for a crime and receive an Out of Court Disposal
  • Are charged with a crime and have to go to court
  • Are convicted of a crime and are given a sentence

What do we do in the Youth Offending Team?

All young people who we work with will be allocated a Youth Offending Officer who will:

  • Explain the process of going to court
  • Make sure that the young people and families know what they need to do
  • Support young people and families to plan for the future
  • Provide interventions to reduce the risk of re-offending
  • Supervise statutory court orders

To do this we work closely with lots of different partners, including:

  • The Police and Courts
  • The Probation Service
  • Schools and Education Providers
  • The Prison Service and Young Offender Institutions/Secure Establishments
  • Victims of Crime

What happens if you don't work with us?

It is really important that all young people entering the youth justice system work with our team - we are here to help your family through this difficult time and to help prevent your child from re-offending.  If you do not work with us you may be returned to court and a different sentence may result.

Support for all young people.

Growing up can be difficult for young people and parents and carers can often worry about their child's behaviour.

Our service is for young people who enter the criminal justice system but if you feel that you or your child needs support this can be sought from:

  • School - staff in school can give you information and guidance to help you support your child
  • Play, youth and sports clubs  - taking part in something positive can really help your child and the people running the activities will be able to work with your child  to encourage positive choices
  • Targeted Youth Support - part of Bolton Council and is targeted at children and young people  at risk of entering the criminal justice system.  They work with 8 - 17 year olds to look at the risks they are taking and encourage behaviour changes.

You can look at the Local Directory to find things for children and young people to do in your area.
