Taxi fare setting

The Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976 permits the Local Authority to fix and vary the fares charged by hackney carriage vehicles.

The maximum fare charged by a Bolton licensed hackney carriage vehicle is fixed by the Local Authority. The fares were increased in 2008. A copy of the current 'schedule of fares' is displayed at the bottom of this page.

  • A written request is submitted to the Local Authority, usually by the hackney carriage associations
  • The application must include details of the increase/decrease and provide supporting evidence
  • The Local Authority will grant, amend or refused the application.

The Local Authority is obliged under Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976, to advertise any variation to an approved table of fares.  Any objections to the proposal, must be considered before a new fare is brought into force.

The Local Authority intends to review this procedure and is looking to introduce a linked cab cost index, which would provide a percentage annual increase over an agreed period.

Once a fare increase has been approved, the Local Authority is required to ensure all licensed hackney carriage vehicles with meters, who areoperating under the new tariff are checked and sealed. This is to ensure that members of the public are not overcharged for their journey.

If you wish to compliment, complain or comment on a hackney carriage vehicle/driver or fare, please complete the ‘enquiry form’ listed to the right hand side of this page. Once you have completed the form, click on file then save and attach this file to an email and forward it electronically to the Licensing Team (licensing.unit@bolton.gov.uk), or print the completed form and send it through the post.  Alternatively you can contact the Licensing Team to request a pack.
