We will clean adopted roads and paths to keep areas looking clean and tidy and to ensure that people can use roads and pavements safely.  Since 2011 the council agreed a change in the street cleaning schedule in order to make savings of £2.8 million from the Neighbourhood Services budget. We no longer has the capacity to operate outside of the scheduled programme unless there is an immediate health or safety risk associated with accumulations of litter.

In April 2015 Bolton at Home appointed a private sector operator to maintain communal land on former council estates. Bolton council no longer has any responsibility for land belonging to Bolton at Home that does not form part of the adopted highway.

We will:

  • Continuously clean town centres
  • Carry our regular area cleans including adopted roads and paths on frequencies between 3 weeks and 18 weeks
  • Remove accumulations of rubbish from council land
  • Empty litter bins weekly
  • Help with your locally organised clean-ups

You can help us by:

  • Being tidy with your litter and chewing gum
  • Using the free civic amenity sites and bring sites
  • Having waste collection contracts for your business
  • Not leaving your dog's mess for others
  • Not 'Fly posting' - it's untidy and illegal
  • Not parking where you want us to clean

How to report an issue

Street cleaning is a programmed activity and there is no capacity to respond to street cleaning requests outside of the published schedule. It is affected by seasonal factors such as leaf fall, snow and floods and by parked vehicles which prevent kerbside and pavement sweeping.

When entering an area teams must prioritise fly tipping and heavily littered areas and so all streets may not be cleaned or mechanically swept on each visit. Reports will be passed to the street cleaning teams to highlight issues with individual areas prior to the planned visit.

You can find the date of the next scheduled clean in your area by following the "Find My Nearest" tab after selecting "Resident" at the top of this page.
