What we do:
The childrens' services department provides many services to the children and young people of Bolton, from nursery through to college. One of many services provided by the human resources team includes advice on work experience placements.
What is work experience:
Work experience is organised by your school or college, is undertaken during year 10 or year 11, and usually lasts for one week or two weeks. You will get an opportunity to spend some time sampling and learning about a particular job or area of work, and to see what skills you are going to need for the world of work. This can be of great help if you are still unsure about what career path you wish to follow.
How to go about it:
When organising your work experience, think through the subjects you are studying, what you would like to do, and where you would like to work, in order to fit in with your plans for the future. Not all jobs are possible, due to confidentiality, insurance purposes and many other reasons, therefore please be realistic about your choices. Do some research prior to approaching your chosen organisation; make some phone calls, send emails, or ask whether you could call into places. Finding a placement is good experience in applying for jobs!

- Your school may have links with a company that you are interested in, so please ask your work experience co-ordinator, careers teacher or adviser within your school for advice.

During your work placement, you may be able to find out what skills employers are looking for when recruiting for a position. Working in an adult environment gives you the chance to develop your self confidence, and your communication skills. This should help you in higher and further education, as well as in your future career.
