School - teenage pregnancy

 Teenage Pregnancy

Young People
It’s your choice whether to have sex or not.
Whatever the pressures, you don’t have to do anything you’re not comfortable with. . It’s not a decision you should take lightly and by law you should be over 16.

Please remember if you are thinking about having sex without contraception, you could become pregnant, or get a sexually transmitted infection.

If you want to talk to someone in confidence about sex or relationships you can contact either one of the below organisations:

The Parallel is a health and well-being service which may help you. It is a free and confidential service for young people between the ages of 11 and 19.

phone- The Parallel 01204 462444

phone Connexions on 0800 052 5559
Or you can speak with your parents, School Nurse or Doctor
"Sex is a big thing. You owe it to yourself to find out as much as you can about it" See the external links of helpful websites at the end of this page.

Young Parents
If you think you might be pregnant, it’s important to take a reliable pregnancy test as soon as possible. You can speak to somebody in confidence at The Parallel to discuss your choices. Alternatively, visit your local GP or local sexual health clinic.

If your test is negative then you will need to think carefully about your future choices including contraception options. Visit The Parallel, a local GP or a local sexual health clinic for information and advice.

If your test is positive you need to speak to someone about your options as soon as possible. You may already be in touch with a Connexions Personal Advisor, your Doctor, School Nurse, or you may want to give us a call yourself. There are a range of support services for young parents, see our contact us section.

We respect your right to confidentiality. See our Contact Us section at the end.

Parents of teenagers

As you can see Bolton is committed in working towards bringing down the number of unplanned pregnancies in young people.

As part of our advice we encourage all young people to talk to their parents about their situation as we feel that the support from their own families is invaluable.

Because we offer a confidential service, we can give information and support to help young people feel confident. This enables them to make an informed decision. This may include choosing not to have sex or making sure they use protection if they decide on a sexual relationship.

Where teenage mothers want to remain in full time education, we offer a supportive service to enable them to get the qualifications they want in order to increase their chances of getting jobs and hopefully securing a better future for themselves and their children.

If you are the parent or grandparent of a pregnant teenager, you may wish to talk over your concerns with the Midwife. We also have teenage pregnancy officer who works with parents and grandparents to offer support (contact us).

You may also find the parentline website (link at the bottom of the page) useful, it gives helpful information to parents and hints and tips about talking to young people about sex.
