Report a damaged or missing road sign, line or street nameplate

Although our highway inspectors regularly monitor Bolton's roads, signs and lines we still rely on members of the public in the first instance to report damaged or missing signage.

To report a damaged or missing road line, sign or street nameplate please contact our Streetcare helpline by email or by calling 01204 336600.

Help us remove unnecessary road signs

Following recent government guidelines, Bolton Council aims to remove unnecessary roadside clutter such as signs, bollards and railings.

If you know of any road sign that is no longer needed - for example where a school has closed, but there is still a school warning sign in place - or road signs nearby that you believe are unnecessary and clutter the environment, then let us know.

Some signs need to be in place due to the relevant laws and regulations, but we will look at all the suggestions we receive and, where appropriate, we will aim to remove the sign if deemed unnecessary. If we have any other road maintenance work planned in the area, we may include for the signs to be removed as part of this future work.

Please contact us with your suggestions.

Requesting a new sign

Requests for new or additional signage are assessed on an individual basis.

After taking into account:

  • the law and traffic regulations
  • the needs of a wide audience
  • the suitability and safety of the site
  • the aim to keep street clutter to a minimum

..we will determine if the location identified requires the placement of a new sign.

Please contact us for further details.

Mirrors on the highway

Bolton Council does not normally approve the use of road mirrors on the public highway. Department of Transport advice is that due to issues such as condensation, dazzle, distortion, likelyhood of vandalism, difficulty in estimating distances or speed and the over-reliance on mirrors over looking left and right, use is not encouraged. Even when permitted, they are only allowed in rural areas, never in built-up urban areas.

Transport for Greater Manchester has started to install small 'Trixi' mirrors on traffic lights to improve cyclist safety at junctions. You can read more about these on their website.
