Refuse - litter bins

Street litter bins

Litter on streets is unsightly and creates a negative impression of an area. Always try to use a litter bin where possible or take your litter home.

The Environmental Protection Act of 1990 states that if a person drops, throws, deposits or leaves anything that causes defacement in a public place, they are committing a littering offence. The Council enforces this act in public places with it's enforcement team.

Litter enforcement

As a result of better rules introduced in 2006, Police Community Support Officers and Bolton Council Enforcement Officers are now able to issue fixed penalty notices to anyone seen dropping litter in the street.  As part of their commitment to a litter-free town, Bolton Council now has an environmental crime unit to patrol Bolton, helping to keep it clean.
