Bolton council has adopted Natural England's target of one hectare of local nature reserve for every 1000 residents in its environment strategy 2006-2011 to show the council’s commitment to nature conservation.

Find out where the council nature reserves are and more details about them.

Everyday contact with nature is important for people’s well-being and quality of life. Providing local nature reserves helps to increase awareness and enjoyment of our native wildlife and offers people special opportunities to discover, learn about and enjoy their local environment.

Local nature reserves are declared under powers conferred by the national parks & countryside act 1949 to protect places of local special interest that are rich in biodiversity, geology or landscape features.

Declaration of new local nature reserves in Bolton is continuing and management of existing reserves is undertaken to maintain and improve wildlife the habitats.

More information on local nature reserves can be found on the Natural England website.
