Moving into or vacating business premises
If you are moving into a property, it is important to contact us as soon as possible. We will take details of the property which you are occupying and the dates of occupation and also answer any queries you may have.
If you vacate a property, it is important to notify us immediately. The business rates charge will be amended to the date of vacation and any overpayment can be refunded.
If recovery action has started the debt outstanding can also be amended.
Problems paying your Business Rates?
Every March, we will issue an annual business rates bill for each non-domestic property in Bolton. Payment for the financial year starting in April and ending in March will be by 10 monthly instalments from April to January.
If you miss paying an instalment, a reminder will be sent asking you to bring the account up-to-date within seven days.
If this is not paid within seven days, you will lose the right to pay by instalments and the outstanding balance will become due immediately.
If you are unable to pay the amount due, please contact us immediately.
If you do not pay or make any contact, a summons will be issued and a Liability Order obtained from the Magistrates’ Court. This will incur additional costs of £110 that will be added to your account.
A Liability Order gives the Council the right to:
- make an arrangement with the ratepayer to clear the debt and the costs
- pass the case to the council’s bailiffs who will recover the money owed to the council and additional costs will be incurred
- commence bankruptcy or liquidation proceedings
Failure to recover the debt by the above methods may result in the council applying to the Magistrates’ Court for a committal warrant which can result in a term of imprisonment.
