The latest council information will now be heading straight to Bolton residents and the wider world through the social media site Twitter.
Twitter fever has gripped the nation throughout 2009, with the general public and celebrities alike detailing their every waking movement in just 140 characters.
With increasing numbers of local authorities using the tool to get across important messages, Bolton Council has joined the massed ranks of Tweeters to get closer to its residents – as well as any other interested parties around the globe.
The type of information that will appear on the council’s Twitter feed will include: links to the latest news; warning of any television or radio appearances for the council; road closures; forthcoming events; alerts to highlight the monthly release of Bolton Scene; new pictures; and any last minute information that people need to know as soon as possible.
Councillor Linda Thomas, Bolton Council’s Executive Member for Corporate Resources, said: “Using social media such as Twitter is a great way of reaching a greater cross-section of the community, and of making sure that people get the latest information as soon as it becomes available.
“Being able to find out about a closed road within minutes of it happening is something that just wouldn’t be possible without the use of something like Twitter, and hopefully as many people as possible will follow us and get closer to their council.
