Recession busting rent cut for tenants

Thousands of Bolton at Home tenants are set to benefit from a rent cut from next month.

The reduction comes into force on August 10, with the reduced amount backdated to April 6.

The average rent increase in Bolton was set at 6.85 per cent but in March, the Government announced that this year’s rent increase by all local authorities should be reduced to 3.1 per cent. Bolton Council was given £1.56 million of Government funding to cap the increase.

Residents were expecting to pay around £3.97 per week more but now many will see an increase of just £1.82 per week.

Bolton at Home, which manages the council’s housing stock, has been notifying residents of the changes by post, with full details on how their individual rent is affected.

Tenants who are up to date with their payments will automatically receive a credit on their rent account for the amount overpaid between April and August.

Councillor Nick Peel, Bolton Council’s Executive Member for Housing, said: “In the current climate every little helps and this means our tenants will be saving around £2.15 per week. We’ve also sent out pocket guides to make it easy for tenants to understand the change and how it benefits them.”

Councillor Noel Spencer, Chair of Bolton at Home, added: "We've done all we can to ensure rent levels remain affordable in Bolton and this measure will allow us to keep our rents among the lowest in Greater Manchester. We reassure tenants that their repairs and maintenance service will not be affected in anyway by these changes."

If someone is behind with their rent payments then the credit will be used to reduce the tenant’s arrears. Housing benefit recipients will have their benefit amended to reflect the reduction in their rent increase.

Anyone who pays their rent by direct debit will have their payments automatically amended. Tenants, who pay their rent by any other method than direct debit, should adjust their future rent payments to the new amount set out in their letter.
