Thousands of free car parking spaces will be available for shoppers in Bolton town centre in the run up to Christmas and New Year.
Bolton Council has drawn up the plan to attract shoppers and boost high street trade.
Parking will be free all day Saturday and Sunday and on weekdays after 3pm, from November 1 until January 27, at four multi-storey car parks. Charges will be waived at Bow Street, Deane Road, Topp Way and the Octagon.
The council’s cabinet approved the scheme on Monday (October 15) and it will be implemented by the council’s partners NCP, who operate Deane Road, Topp Way and the Octagon, and APCOA, who manage Bow Street.
Leader of Bolton Council, Councillor Cliff Morris, said: “We know times are tough everywhere and we want to support our retailers and shoppers over Christmas and New Year.
“The free parking scheme is something that town centre retailers have been asking for and when we met with them recently they welcomed the news.
“We’ve also got a programme of entertainment and events in the run-up to Christmas and we will be running a campaign with town centre businesses to encourage people to shop in Bolton.”
If the scheme is successful the council will consider bringing in free parking when major events are held in the town centre.
