A local woman who has just founded her own charity will be taking part in the One Bolton 5k run on Sunday May 8, to raise money for her son and other children with similar problems.
Sara Jones's son Jacob, aged 3, was born with Hirschsprung's disease which affects the bowels. Children with Hirschprung’s often need one or several operations in order for their digestive system to work properly. Jacob has had 13 operations, including five major surgeries.
When Sara found out that her son had the disease, she found it very difficult to find out information about it and also to get support, as it is a relatively rare condition. So, she recently decided to start a charity called the CHAMPS Appeal (Curing Hirschsprung's And Making Positive Steps).
Sara said: "After Jacob was born and was diagnosed with Hirschprung's, I didn't really know where to go for information or support and there wasn't really anyone I could talk to. So I decided to start my own charity to try and help other families and children who are in a similar situation."
The charity aims to support local kids who have bowel and bladder disorders by providing local support groups, days out for parents and children, research into a cure and awareness campaigns.
Sara added: "I've never taken part in a run before, but saw the publicity for the One Bolton 5k and thought that this community run sounded ideal as the first fundraising event for my new charity. I'm hoping to raise several hundred pounds and get the charity off to a flying start!
"I'd like to encourage as many people as possible to sponsor me, or to take part in the run themselves and raise money for causes close to their own hearts."
The One Bolton 5k run has been organised by Bolton Wanderers Community Trust in partnership with Bolton Council and Active Synergy, a social enterprise who deliver sporting events across the North West.
People of all ages from seven upwards and all fitness levels can enter to run, jog or walk five kilometres to raise funds for a charity of their choice, or alternatively people can take part in a 2012 metre fun run.
On the day, there will be entertainment for all the family including fairground rides, stalls and activities.
Councillor Cliff Morris, Leader of Bolton Council said: "The One Bolton 5k is about bringing the community together to raise money for good causes. Sara is an inspiration to others in starting her own charity and also in taking on her first ever run. We'd like to encourage other Boltonians who have never run before but want to raise money for causes close to them to get involved and sign up for this race."
