New fishy dish on school meals menu 


The winner of Bolton Council’s dream school meal competition has now been revealed.

Joshua Glicklich, a pupil at St Peter and St Paul RC Primary School, was picked out of a shortlist from hundreds of entries.

More than 20,000 primary school pupils were invited to come up with a bag of ingredients for catering bosses to turn into a delicious school meal. The dish will now be included on the school dinners’ menu from winter.

Entrants were encouraged to visit Bolton Market, on Ashburner Street, to browse through the wealth of healthy, fresh, local produce for inspiration in picking ingredients.

Joshua chose cod, pasta, tartare sauce, avocado, carrots, sweet corn and low fat yoghurt as his ingredients.

School meals chef Philip Ogden will cook up a dish using the ingredients, which will be served up at the school, on Pilkington Street, on Friday (July 3).

On the menu is baked cod with cheese and herb crust served with avocado and pasta salad, with yoghurt topped muffins.

Councillor Ismail Ibrahim, Executive Member for Environmental Services, said: “It was a close call - the children came up with lots of ideas but Joshua’s entry really stood out.

“When the dish goes on the menu in September, we’ll be using sustainable cod caught from approved fisheries and approved by the Marine Stewardship Council.”
