A World Cup themed campaign kicked off at Bolton Market today (June 8) with a huge prize up for grabs.
A series of free football-themed cookery demonstrations and activities will take place in the market on Ashburner Street, from June 8 to June 26, to celebrate the tournament.
A competition will run throughout the campaign with a football fan’s dream prize package, donated by cash and carry operator Costco Wholesale, up for grabs. The winner will score a prize, worth more than £1,000, which includes a 40in flat screen TV; Nintendo Wii; DVD player; digital radio; mini fridge and football related goodies.
The events was launched by top chef Tom Bridge, with representatives from Costco Wholesale and Bolton Market, at the indoor cookery kitchen. Throughout the next couple of weeks, chefs will be cooking up everything from Argentinean steak wraps, American chilli dogs and Spanish tapas, to Italian risotto, Aussie grills and classic English pasties.
To enter the competition, log on to the Real Radio website from June 10 and answer the question. More information on activities at the market and recipes are also available on the website.
Councillor Akhtar Zaman, Bolton Council’s Executive Member for Environmental Services, said: “We’ve got loads on at the market to really get into the World Cup spirit and I’d urge everyone to come down and watch the free demos. We’ve got a brilliant prize package on offer thanks to Costco Wholesale and I wish everyone luck in the competition.”
Costco's Oldham Warehouse Manager, Bruce Greenaway added: “We are happy to work with local businesses and the community in this way.”
On Saturday June 12, Tom will cook a mix of American and English dishes to celebrate England's Group C opener against the USA, from 10am to 12pm.
Streetwise Soccer Skills will bring freestyle football entertainment to the market on Saturday June 12, 19 and 26 from 1pm to 3pm.
On Saturday June 19, a local chef will cook up a dish and on Friday June 25, NHS Bolton community nutritionist Joan Farnworth will cook meals easy to serve up at half time including Mexican chilli and potato wedges.
An Asian cookery school will also be demonstrating Thai cookery, and offering free samples on June 8, 10, 12, 15 and 17.
Last date for entries is midnight on Tuesday June 22 and the winner will be presented with their prize on Saturday June 26.
Bolton Market was judged as Britain’s Best Indoor Market 2010 by the National Association of British Market Authorities (NABMA) earlier this year.
