Pop singer Laura White will head up the local stars taking centre stage for Bolton’s Olympic concert.

The news follows after last week’s announcement, from Coca Cola, that Indie rockers The Wombats will headline the concert.

Bolton is hosting the free show on Thursday, May 31, at Spa Road playing fields in Queen’s Park, from 4.30pm to 8pm.

Leader of Bolton Council, Councillor Cliff Morris, said: “We’ve got a fantastic line-up of local talent performing at Bolton’s free Olympic concert. I’m sure they will receive a very warm welcome from the crowd and will do Bolton proud.”

Laura White added: “I feel privileged and excited about performing on the night the Olympic torch passes through my home town. The thought of the Olympic torch passing through Bolton is so exciting and to be given the opportunity to perform on the night is fantastic, I can't wait.”

Performances from the Sharples and Westhoughton School samba band; the Octagon Theatre, and the Sunshine Street Dancers will also entertain the crowd.

Presenting partners of the Olympic torch relay, Lloyds TSB will bring stunning acrobatic shows, and Samsung will stage dance performances.

Towards the end of the show, the last torchbearer of the day will light a celebration cauldron on stage at the event which will enable the Olympic flame to be seen by the audience.

Chair of London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, Lord Sebastian Coe, said: “The evening celebrations give the whole family a chance to share the excitement of the Olympic Games as we count down to the opening ceremony.

“The event in Bolton is set for an exciting line-up, including performances from talented local people who will give the celebration a distinct feel.”

The Olympic torch comes to the town on Thursday, May 31, as part of its 70-day journey around the UK.

Bolton is one of 66 locations across the UK, and one of only two places in Greater Manchester, that has been chosen to host an official evening celebration by London 2012 Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
