Let's go fly a kite...

This Sunday (14/6) Moss Bank Park will play host to an amazing display of kite flying as part of a fun-filled day for all the family.

From noon until 6pm Bolton Council and the Kite Collective Display Team will present the town’s first family kite day, with kites of all different shapes and sizes taking to the air, from a 30m long inflatable Octopus, to intricate appliqué kites.

If the winds are good, traditional Chinese Dragon kites will be launched to fascinate spectators. The largest, measuring some 80m long, will stretch to the sky like a giant ladder.

In the event of really strong winds, the team will launch a 100m long, multicoloured gecko which will soar high above the park.

Spectators will be able to buy kites from a specialist trader, who will be giving advice on flying tips and which kite will suit them best.

Around 150 children have already made their own kites in preparation for Sunday's event through a series of workshops organised by Bolton at Home's West Neighbourhood Management Team.

There will be a host of other family-focused events, including kite-making workshops, arts and crafts, circus skills, street artists and face painting.

Any Children attending are also invited to bring along an entrant for a display of parachuting teddy bears, which will be dropped from the top of a kite line and parachuted safely back to Earth. Each teddy will be given its own certificate to show it has completed the drop.

For those that just want to laze on the grass and soak up the fun with a picnic, there is a varied and different line-up for all the family, with fantastic entertainers performing for the crowds including: Danny Zapparelli's Circus Show; the Amazing Glen Scott’s display of fire eating, escapology and illusions; Cheshire Falconry; a rescue dog display team; comedy from daredevil stuntman Blunder Fudge; and Mr Tickles, a Children’s Comedy performer.

Bolton Council’s Executive Member for Cleaner, Greener, Safer, Councillor Sufrana Bashir-Ismail, said: “The event will provide a wonderful, colourful day for all the family to enjoy. With the skills of the Kite Display Team on show, I am sure that the flying will be spectacular, and inspire young and old alike to take up kite-flying.

“I would like to wish everyone involved in the festivities the best of luck, and I’m looking forward to a great day for everyone.”
