Laura White will switch on Bolton's light

X-Factor star Laura White will add a touch of sparkle when she switches on Bolton’s Christmas lights this year.

The 21-year-old singing sensation will join the Mayor, Councillor Norman Critchley and Father Christmas to flick the giant switch at 7pm in Victoria Square, on Thursday, December 3.

She will also perform her new single ‘You Should Have Known’ which is released on November 2.

Laura joins a long list of Bolton celebrities that have flicked the big switch, including Amir Khan, Vernon Kay and Peter Kay.

She said: “It really is an honour to have been chosen. I class myself as an honorary Boltonian and it’s a real privilege to follow in the footsteps of people like Vernon and Peter. Bolton’s very close to my heart, I studied there, I shop there and I grew up just around the corner. I think it will be an amazing experience and I just can’t wait!”

The lights switch-on also heralds the launch of a festive food market. Stalls selling festive fayre will be on Victoria Square on December 4 and 5, 11 and 12, and 18, 19 and 20.

The festive fun kicks off at 6pm in Victoria Square. Carol singers and brass bands will also provide live music and entertainment.

And the grand, long established Christmas parade of colourful characters, featuring Santa with the Mayor in his sleigh, will once again wind its way through the town centre to Victoria Square for the switch on.

The Leader of Bolton Council, Councillor Cliff Morris said: "We’re delighted that Laura will be joining us for a very traditional Christmas lights switch-on this year.
"Bolton town centre will be a stunning sight when Laura’s done the honour and flicked the switch. With the market and other activities we have planned, we’re hoping to attract lots of shoppers into the town centre in the run-up to Christmas. Visitors of all ages can expect a magical experience in Bolton this year."
