A chance to sample a slice of fine dining in the company of artisan baker Paul Hollywood is being offered as part of this year’s Bolton Food and Drink Festival.
The celebrity chef and judge on The Great British Bake Off will be guest of honour at a special six-course gala dinner at The Albert Halls, on the first evening of the festival, Friday, August 24.
Paul will entertain guests with an after-dinner speech prior to him appearing alongside fellow judge and acclaimed cookery writer, Mary Berry, at the festival on Victoria Square that weekend.
Tickets for the gala dinner are priced £45 and include a sumptuous six-course meal accompanied by fine wines selected by Gerrard Seel Wine Merchants of Cheshire.
A sommelier will give a brief introduction to each wine served and explain why it has been selected to accompany dishes such as pressed meat terrine, pan fried red mullet and glazed duck breast. Vegetarian alternatives will be available.
Diners will also have the opportunity to taste Paul’s own creations from the Paul Hollywood Artisan Bread Co, which provides breads to Harrods in London.
Dessert will be designed and created by catering students at Bolton College, following a competition on Friday, June 15 to find the winning sweet dish.
The gala dinner is a perfect start to what has rapidly become one of the best food and drink festivals in the country. This year the festival is sponsored by Bolton College and Bluemantle.
Paul Hollywood said: “I’m thrilled to be a part of Bolton’s Food and Drink Festival and the gala dinner will whet people’s appetite for the weekend ahead.
“It’s great to give people the opportunity to sample some locally sourced produce and taste the accompanying wines in such fabulous surroundings. I’m looking forward to meeting everyone and hearing just how passionate they are about food!”
Leader of Bolton Council, Councillor Cliff Morris, said: “What better way to start the Food and Drink Festival than with a celebration of excellent food enjoyed in good company?
“The gala dinner will enable us to officially welcome one of the country’s finest bakers, Paul Hollywood, and show him some traditional Bolton hospitality prior to his cooking demonstrations at the festival.”
Marie Gilluley, Bolton College principal, said: “We have over 800 catering students here at Bolton College and we’re really excited about having the opportunity to provide dessert at the gala dinner. It’s an excellent way to kick off the Food and Drink Festival, and we’re sure the students will be able to provide a final course that’s just as delicious as Paul Hollywood’s creations!”
Tickets will go on sale later this month via The Albert Halls box office on 01204 334400.
