Nominations have opened for this year’s Best Customer Care award for council staff.

The award is for the person, team or project that has gone the extra mile to deliver outstanding service to customers. It recognises those who make a difference to the people of Bolton. It can be big or small, someone who helps a customer every day or an act of kindness. Those who display the best customer care are those who work with and involve residents and the groups that they work with.

The public and council staff can nominate and will be able to vote for the winner in November.

Last year’s winner was Mark Crowder, an NVQ Lead Administrator in Business Support for Children’s and Adult Services.

Mark spotted a man in a high visibility jacket walking along the railway track next to the Castle Hill centre. He noticed it was the wrong colour jacket for the railways. When the man began to climb up the signal, Mark told colleagues to ring the police and ran out without a coat in a gale and driving rain to talk to the man, and try to persuade him to come down.

The man, who had special needs, said he wasn't happy and wanted to end his life.
Thanks to Mark's quick thinking and prompt action, a message was sent to the driver of an oncoming train, which was stopped just metres from the signal the man had climbed, averting a potential disaster. When the police arrived, they and Mark managed to get the man to safety.

Previous winners have included the Re-ablement service which helps adults after they’ve been ill; Ann Brown and her team at Blackrod Library who support Blackrod Scarecrow Festival; and Kayley Mabon, Children and Families Worker, who runs groups at Little Lever Children Centre for parents and children.

Best Customer Care is one of nine Bolton’s Best awards with council staff nominating in the other categories. The council’s IT supplier, Agilisys has once again agreed to be a sponsor enabling us to cover the costs of running the awards.

The winners will be announced in December.
