A project that young people have been keeping under their hats will finally be revealed in Bolton.
The Hatwalk fashion show will take place at the Market Place, Bolton, on Sunday, March 6 from noon to 4pm.
The day will see a range of millinery master classes and workshops for members of the public, plus a unique hat-themed fashion show, featuring “models” from Bolton Library and Museum Service.
The Hatwalk project is part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad programme, Stories of the World, which aims to showcase our museums, libraries and archives to a worldwide audience.
Bolton Library and Museum Service has been working with pupils from Rumworth Special School, milliner Justine Bradley-Hill and the Market Place to design and make a range of hats to showcase to shoppers.
The flamboyant creations have been inspired by collections at the museum, including an impressive pyramid hat and one inspired by the town’s most important invention, the Spinning Mule.
The Hatwalk will see weeks of hard work culminate in a spectacular display of local talent.
Bolton Council’s Executive Member for Adult and Community Services, Councillor Elaine Sherrington, said: “The pupils from Rumworth School have really enjoyed their classes with Justine and have learned a lot about expressing their creativity through millinery.
“At the same time, they have explored different countries of the world through the collections at Bolton Museum and the Cultural Olympiad programme. To see their work displayed in a fashion show at the Market Place will be a great reward for their hard work.”
Rod Neasham, centre manager, Market Place Shopping Centre said: “We’re only too pleased to support the museum in staging its hat show. Market Place offers an accessible and central venue and is well set up to host this kind of event.
“The hatwalk show is a perfect fit with our own spring fashion weekend and we hope many people will attend both events.”
Following the fashion show, the hats will be added to the museum’s collections for potential display in the future.
The shopping centre is hosting its own two-day fashion event on Friday, March 4 and Saturday, March 5.
Retailers including Zara, Oasis and Warehouse will be showcasing the latest spring trends at four daily catwalk shows in the main mall space on the ground floor, starting at 11.30am, 12.30pm, 2pm and 3pm.
