Westhoughton Market will now open on Fridays
A town centre market will now open on Fridays from this week (November 4).
Traders at Westhoughton Market have asked to trial an additional day following the success of late Thursday openings.
Council chiefs extended the opening hours on Thursdays last month, after requests from traders to stay open until 7pm.
Westhoughton Market will now open Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 9am to 5pm and Thursdays until 7pm.
The market is currently undergoing a major revival and developing a niche for quirky stalls thanks to efforts from traders and Bolton Council.
The council invested £4,000 in a canopy, signage and doors earlier this year to boost the market.
All the stalls are now occupied and shoppers can buy produce including: cupcakes; video games; retro sweets; shoes; bedroom furniture; lingerie; health foods; baby gifts and mobile phone accessories.
Traders also started a local produce market in the summer, with the next event being held on Saturday, November 5. A car boot is also held on the second Saturday of the month.
Bolton Council’s Executive Member for Environmental Services, Councillor Akhtar Zaman, said: “Late Thursday openings seem to be working and traders have asked us if they can open on Fridays. The market is undergoing a real revival thanks to the improvements we’ve made and the fantastic efforts of the traders so we’re happy to trial the extra day and see how well it goes.”
Lisa Openshaw, from Truly Scrumptious Retro Sweets, added: “I feel it is important that we increase our trading days so that as many people as possible can access the market. Many customers have been asking for us to open for some time. Now the market is full it seems the right time to increase our days."
Sara Cartwright, from Sara’s Little Stars Baby shop, added: “I have benefited by opening late on Thursdays with several people coming in from work to order gifts. Many shops now open until 7pm on a Thursday and as traders we feel we should extend our hours to benefit those who are working."
Shoppers can also win prizes by entering a Red Top Hat competition. Pictures of a red top hat on display at different venues in Westhoughton will be posted on the market website and on Westhoughton Market’s Facebook page.
