Malaysian chef Norman Musa will share his tips at Bolton Food and Drink Festival 2012

A four-course feast of free demonstrations by inspirational chefs will be served up at this year’s Bolton Food and Drink Festival.

As well as celebrity chef demos over the Bank Holiday weekend (August 24 to 27), including Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry, organisers have lined up a host of local and high profile chefs who are passionate about food.

A record total of 14 chefs will deliver free cooking demos over the four days at the award winning Bolton Market on Ashburner Street, the Market Place Shopping Centre and in Victoria Square.

Two Michelin-starred chef Michael Caines will make a welcome return to Bolton and open the festival for the second year running, with a cookery demonstration at noon on Friday, August 24.

Michael will also take part in an exciting, live Ready, Steady Cook challenge during the launch, along with chefs Robert Owen Brown and Mike Harrison. Fans of Michael can also stick around for his second free demo at the Market Place Shopping Centre at 2.30pm.

Michael said: “It’s great to be launching the festival on Friday, which is a dedicated Local Produce Day.  All the food we’ll be using is sourced locally so I’m looking forward to putting on a great demo and hope people will take plenty of tips away to help them get the best out of seasonal produce at home.”

Also delivering free demos on Friday will be festival favourite Aazam Ahmed who will create his signature Asian fusion dishes in the AGA Rangemaster Cookery Theatre, in the festival marquee on Victoria Square.

Friday’s theme is local produce and there will be no better chef to inspire some good, old fashioned British cooking than Robert Owen Brown, the executive chef at the Mark Addy in Manchester.

Robert is an advocate of local produce and back-to-nature cooking, and is sure to rustle up some fantastic dishes in the Bolton Market demonstration kitchen on Friday and Saturday.

Another local talent joining us on Saturday will be Chris Yates, the co-owner and executive chef of the Shoulder of Mutton in Holcombe. He will be joined in the Market Place Shopping Centre by fellow festival newcomers Justine Forrest and Horwich self-taught chef Andrea Mellon.

Bolton’s very own spice girl, Anjali Patak, will once again wow crowds with her traditional Asian cuisine at two demos in the Market Place Shopping Centre.

Sunday’s line-up at the Market Place Shopping Centre features the North West’s original celebrity chef, Andrew Nutter; Dan Winter, head chef at Egerton House Hotel in Bolton; and Mike Harrison, whose career spans almost 30 years and has taken him around the world.

On Monday, Malaysian chef Norman Musa will take to the kitchen to share some of his secrets which led him to become the creator, co-owner and executive chef at Ning restaurants. Also cooking up a storm will be former Masterchef of Great Britain, Brian Mellor; 2011 Masterchef finalist and creator of The Hungry Gecko street food brand, Jackie Kearney; and Sean Kelly, executive chef at the Worsley Park Marriott.

The Leader of Bolton Council, Councillor Cliff Morris, said: “The Bolton Food and Drink Festival has grown and grown each year, and this year we are thrilled to welcome no less than 14 local chefs who are only too happy to share their expertise with the public.”

“Due to the increasing popularity of the event, we have been able to attract a wider variety of chefs and it’s great to include shoppers at Bolton Market and the Market Place Shopping Centre in the free demonstrations.”

Rod Neasham, Centre Manager at Market Place Shopping Centre added: “We're really pleased to be able to provide a fabulous venue for shoppers to witness the very best in culinary expertise for free.”

“Professional chefs will be bringing their own unique and imaginative style of cooking to the shopping centre, encouraging audience interaction and sharing the secrets to their success.”

“The line-up this year is better than ever, with the likes of Michael Caines, Anjali Patak and Andrew Nutter headlining, so make sure you get to the shopping centre early to grab yourself a front row seat.”
