Bolton is setting its stall out to celebrate market culture as part of a national campaign.

The council has organised a teenage market this Saturday and a day of fun and entertainment at Bolton Market next weekend in support of this month’s Love Your Local Market (LYLM) fortnight.

The UK campaign is organised by the National Association of British Markets Authorities to highlight the importance of local markets.

Leader of Bolton Council, Cllr Cliff Morris, said: “Markets are a crucial part of the local economy and attract visitors to our town.

“Our teenage markets have been a real success and it’s great to see young people getting involved.

“We also have a wonderful, popular market in the heart of Bolton, visited by people from across the region, and it is great to see markets being celebrated in this way.”

The Teenage Market will be on Victoria Square, on Saturday, May 13 from 10am to 4pm.

A total of 31 pitches have been snapped up. Aspiring independent entrepreneurs from Bolton and the region will be selling a range of products including everything from the latest craze – fidget spinners - to cakes, comics and crafts.

Young performers will showcase their musical and dancing talents with performances from samba band Bloco Ashe at 11am, four piece rock band Ghost Cheeks will take to the stage at 1pm; Motion Bridge will rock Bolton at 2pm and acoustic group Thursdays Child will be on at 3pm.

Visitors can also have a go at a range of sports including football, boxing, and cycling.

The week after, on Saturday, May 20, Bolton Market will also host a fun day from 11am to 4pm to celebrate LYLM fortnight.

Live music, free face painting, cookery demos and floral masterclasses will be held in the Lifestyle Hall.

Traders from food stalls Nkono and Rice N Oodle will rustle up dishes, and floral experts from Plantations will also deliver masterclasses on how to put arrangements together. Visitors also have the chance to win a tropical flower arrangement.

Children can have a go at a climbing wall and boxing ring, and birds of prey will also be on display at the outdoor market.

Bolton Market is on Ashburner Street. For more information about LYLM visit www.loveyourlocalmarket.org.uk.
