Bolton’s apprentices and their employers are celebrating Apprenticeship Week (February 7-11).

Young people across Bolton are undergoing apprenticeships to gain qualifications and workplace experience, and among them is Daniel Carney (age 17) from Horwich.

Daniel is in the second and final year of a Hairdressing Apprenticeship programme, which he started after completing the Young Apprenticeship programme with Training for Today. He is now employed at Dawn Marsden Hair Studio, Horwich.

The apprenticeship covers all the basics of hairdressing, including working as a salon junior and assisting senior staff while training as a junior stylist.

Duties include booking appointments, styling hair, and mixing and applying hair colouring. Daniel also studies topics such as hair and skin testing, the effects of chemicals on hair and skin, and the principles of hair colour selection.

Daniel said: “I enjoy the programme, as I have developed lots of skills and receive lots of support from my tutor at Training for Today. Also, my employer feels that the skills I have developed are key to my role as a hairdresser.

“To be successful on this apprenticeship you need to look smart and have excellent communication skills to determine exactly what your customer wants in order to make them happy.”

Daniel is building up his client base ready for his next step onto the Advanced Apprenticeship programme. On this course he will develop his cutting and colouring skills so that he can offer the latest hairstyle trends.

Dawn Marsden, owner of the studio where Daniel works, said: “When I decided to set up my own salon I was alone and looked to the network around me.

“Training for Today has supported three of my stylists through their training, and my continued success is largely due to these good staff. It is always a pleasure to have Training for Today apprentices in my salon.”

There is a whole range of apprenticeships available in Bolton, including: business administration; customer service; catering; IT; nail services; and retail.
