The countdown has begun to Bolton’s ninth annual food and drink festival.

With a day to go, preparations for the four-day event, starting on Friday, are well and truly underway.

Construction of the main festival marquee, in Victoria Square, which will host festival headliners Michael Caines, Gino D’Acampo, John Torode and James Martin, is now complete.

Set up of the stalls for the speciality markets has started. Street food, a pop-up beer garden, and artisan craft stalls are just some of the highlights this year.

A record 130 food, drink and craft traders will take over the town centre. The markets, opening from 10am, will be located on Victoria Square, Oxford Street, Deansgate, and Market Street, with arts and craft stalls on Newport Street.

Festival regulars returning to the square include Franca’s, back for the third year with authentic Italian food, and Masterchef finalist Jackie Kearney, with her vegetarian food trailer Hungry Gecko.

Market Place Europe will provide a pop-up beer garden on the square, including a wine and Pimms bar, German international bar, and a cider and slush bar.

Manchester bar Kro will also be hosting a bar on Deansgate. Revellers can enjoy a drink to the backdrop of live music in both venues. The beer garden and Kro Bar will open from 11am until late.

Festival-goers can experience Indian, Thai and Spanish street food on Market Street. Award winning Indian and Pakistani restaurant Zouk, from Manchester, is back along with Spanish churros stall Churtopia. Watch out too for new food market stalls including 2 Sisters Thai Food, and Jason Jamies Oriental selling charcoal grilled Chinese cuisine.

Deansgate and Oxford Street will also be bustling with food stalls. Artisan bread maker All You Knead and The Little Round Cake Company with their popular tweeners and meringues will be making a welcome return.

Newport Street will have a range of arts and crafts stalls selling products including handmade cards, and jewellery. Bolton Business Ventures will also bring a new entrepreneur daily to test out business ideas.

Leader of Bolton Council, Councillor Cliff Morris, said: “Once again we’ve pulled out all the stops to deliver a jam-packed weekend of food and fun. People travel from all around to enjoy the Bolton Food and Drink Festival and we look forward to welcoming everyone again this year.”

As well as the celebrity chef demonstrations in the main marquee on Victoria Square, the public are invited to free cookery shows in Bolton Market’s Lifestyle Hall on Ashburner Street and in the Market Place Shopping Centre chef marquee on Corporation Street. Chefs include Manchester House’s Aiden Byrne, and Andrew Nutter. Other famous faces include Debbie Halls-Evans, winner of Channel 4’s The Taste.

New for this year is a children’s zone on Le Mans Crescent. CBeebies’ star Katy Ashworth will be entertaining daily with half-hours shows in a marquee (tickets sold out). The cast from the Octagon Theatre will also be putting on free performances of Peter Pan and Wendy in an adjacent marquee, and the Crompton Place shopping centre will host free children’s activities daily.
