Council tax to rise only 1.2 per cent

26/02/10

Bolton council unanimously agreed a council tax rise of only 1.2% at the Council’s full budget meeting last night, with an increase of 1.9% per cent including fire and police services.

Council leaders have cut the increase in next year’s tax bills from the projected 2.0% to 1.2%, by using £750,000 of council reserves, built up as a result of better than expected rates of council tax collection.

This council tax rise means that those living in a Band D property will pay £1,409.83 per year – an increase of £26.24 a year, while those on Band A will pay £939.89, an increase of only £17.50 a year. These amounts include the police and fire precepts.

Despite the rise, the council also agreed extra funding for various services.

An additional £319,000 has been reinstated to the highways budget to deal with road and carriageway maintenance and urgent repairs. This is on top of an agreement at the Executive meeting of 1st February to invest £3m in repairing potholes in Bolton’s roads, following the coldest weather snap in the last 30 years.

An additional £200,000 is to be invested in youth services and youth provision, to provide facilities for young people and to equip young people with the skills to achieve their aspirations.

Extra resources to the tune of £50,000 will also be invested in area forums, specifically on environmental improvements, with residents able to nominate areas they would like to see improving in their local patch.

Council Leader Councillor Cliff Morris said: “We appreciate that times are tough and so we have worked hard to make the rise in council tax as small as possible. We hope that this budget will benefit both families and those on fixed incomes and will help us work towards achieving our priorities for the future.”
