Thousands of residents in Bolton could feel warmer and cosier this winter thanks to a new insulation scheme.
Bolton Council has teamed up with British Gas and insulation specialists, Hillserve, to provide free and subsidised cavity wall and loft insulation for everyone in the borough.
Residents aged 60 or over can benefit from free insulation, subject to availability and a survey.
The scheme also includes those aged under 60, whose homes could be fitted with insulation from as little as £50, subject to availability and a survey.
Insulation can reduce the amount of energy needed to heat an average home and could save up to £200 a year on fuel bills.
Already benefiting from a warmer house, thanks to the scheme, is Mrs Ann Harrison, of Little Lever. She said: “My husband and I have never qualified for anything before. However, when we contacted Hillserve, they told us we could have cavity wall and loft insulation fitted for free as one of us is 60.
“It was all done and dusted within a fortnight and we’ve already noticed a difference. The house is warmer and more comfortable, and we’ve also been able to turn down the thermostat in the hall.”
Bolton Council’s Executive Member for Housing, Nick Peel, said: “Insulation is great; it’s like putting a blanket around your home to keep it warm. As well as feeling warmer, residents should also save money on fuel bills as insulation helps to reduce the amount of heat which escapes from homes.
“This new insulation scheme is particularly great as residents don’t need to be on benefits to take advantage of it. I would urge people to pick up the phone and speak to Hillserve to see how they can get warm and energy efficient.”
